President Obama made a historic visit to Turkey on April 6-7, 2009. This visit has reconfirmed Turkey's increasing significance to US foreign policy interests as it was the President's first overseas bilateral trip. The content of President Obama's messages and his style were warmly welcomed by the Turkish people.
US-Turkey relations have been troubled since the beginning of the war in Iraq. There have been numerous initiatives taken by US and Turkish officials as well as scholars, business leaders and others to put this vital partnership back on track. The TUSIAD report entitled "Rebuilding a Partnership: Turkish-American Relations for a New Era - A Turkish Perspective" should be viewed as a Turkish contribution to the rebuilding of this partnership in light of new needs and realities on the ground. We are pleased to observe that the vision and some of the recommendations of this report have already been put into practice by the Obama administration.
This report was prepared by Mr. Soli Ozel of Istanbul Bilgi University and Assoc. Prof. Suhnaz Yilmaz of Koc University. Mr. Abdullah Akyuz, TUSIAD's US Representative contributed to it on the economic dimension. It analyzes US-Turkey bilateral relations during the presidency of Barack Obama and proposes some policy alternatives in order to rebuild the partnership between the two countries in a period of global economic and political restructuring.
