TUSIAD released the following statement after the announcement of the results of the local elections:
“Turkey experienced a local election process conducted in the spirit of general elections. The campaign process activated intense political discussions. It is essential for Turkey to leave behind the campaign rhetoric and focus on its real agenda.
The global crisis is affecting the country deeply, instigating an increase in unemployment and decline in output levels. The fight against the crisis requires the implementation of controlled monetary and financial policies supporting domestic demand, policies that will increase productivity and competition, policies of sustainable growth that include rehabilitation of business and investment environments as well as measures securing energy supply.
In order to rise as a strong democracy with a globally competitive economy in the 21st century, Turkey needs to undertake the reforms that the EU process necessitates. These reforms encompass such areas as individual and collective freedoms, education, information society, women’s rights, environment, public administration and the informal economy.
Full EU membership by 2014 should be set as a permanent objective on the Turkish agenda. If Turkey does not become a full member by 2014, the membership will be delayed until 2021, which is the beginning of the next financial term.”
