TUSIAD-US/ITS Joint Roundtable with Dr. Sahin Alpay: "Justice and Development Party in Turkey: Islamists or Conservative Democrats?" TUSIAD-US and Institute of Turkish Studies (ITS) co-hosted a roundtable featuring Dr. Sahin Alpay, entitled "Justice and Development Party in Turkey: Islamists or Conservative Democrats?". Dr Alpay is currently a lecturer at Bahcesehir University, Istanbul, Turkey and a columnist for Zaman Daily. He discussed the evolution of Islamists in Turkish political domain and likened the Islamist movements in Turkey to social democrats in Europe. He argued that the concepts of "right" and "left" failed to capture the nature of Turkish politics, instead, he contended, Turkish Islamic movement should be understood within the framework of center vs. periphery. Dr. Alpay also touched upon the clash between Justice and Development Party (AKP) and military/secular establishment and expressed belief that AKP is sincere in its promises to bring about change to Turkish political scene. Dr. Alpay was opinion page editor and columnist for Milliyet (1994-2001), Sabah (1993-94), and Cumhuriyet (1982-92) daily newspapers. He has lectured in journalism at Anadolu University, Eskisehir (1987-88), in Scandinavian politics at Bogazici University, Istanbul (1994-95), and was visiting professor of Turkish politics at Princeton University.
